After 1850, when it became possible to utilize steam-energy, grabs are more
and more used. Especially after 1900 are several revolutionary types of grabs
developed. The factors, of importance for the output of grabs, are identified,
using methods from ground mechanics.
The requirements for hoisting engines, in order to have a satisfactory
cooperation with the grabs, are illustrated at some groups of hoisting
engines.
