Literature survey, Report 92.3.TT.3053, Transport Engineering and Logistics.

Within some years new standards for elevators will developed by the European Union. This papar is written to present an evaluation of todays elevator technology, from which some problems in the elevator technology will follow. It is important that these problems are taken into account by the Dutch Instition of Elevator Technology and the Dutch government. Both will be heavily involved in the formulation of the new European standards for elevators.

The overview of todays elevator technology in this paper consists of three different parts: the historical development of elevator technology, a classification of elevators according to technological aspects and a classification of elevators according to operatinal aspects (traffic regulator systems).

After this an evaluation is given in which some specific developments in todays elevator technology are discussed. After the evaluation some conclusions are presented.
