Report 93.3.TT.4245, Transport Engineering and Logistics.
This report describes how an order point of a stock control system is computed
by simulation. The stock control system is of the type (s,S), which means that
there will be a periodical order and a variable replenishment quantity.
This experiment follows F.C. Van Lookeren Campagne's computer assignment
[F.C. van Lookeren Campagne "Een nieuwe definitie van het begrip serviceniveau",
rapport 93.3.LT.4082, department Transportation Engineering, TU Delft (1993)].
In this exerperiment, the theory appeared not to be valid.
The simulation model is built using the object oriented design paradigm. Theory
and simulation are implemented in the stock controller object. New theories can
be added simply.
After experimenting with the simulation model the theory [E.A. Silver and
R. Peterson "Decision systems for inventory management and production planning",
John Wiley and Sons, New York (1985)]] appeared not always to match with the
simulated practice. Often, an order point computed by simulation is different
from one calculated by theory. Sometimes the order point is too high or too low.
It is clear, that the theory does not consider periodical effects.
